The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD) in general works on bilateral scientific exchange. Unless it is a non-governmental organization representing German universities, it is fully funded by public financial means. The DAAD facilitates co-operation on university level, grants post-graduate scholarships and informs about Germany as a place for both undergraduate and postgraduate university studies.
Every year many students and professors receive scholarships from DAAD in order to complete their studies in Germany or take up research projects together with their German colleagues.
The DAAD assists German language teaching at universities of the hosting countries by sending lecturers and by developing curricula.
In September 2005 the DAAD established the Information Centre in Damascus which is responsible for both Syria and Lebanon and which answers the augmenting demand for information about Germany and its Institutes of Higher Studies.
